Protective Gears – An Important Requirement for Kids’ Safety

Article by Shock Garden

If you are also a school teacher like me, I am sure even you must be amazed at the increasing number of kids using scooters to commute to school. The number is so huge that our school even has a dedicated scooter shed where scooters are kept till school gets over. I am even more amazed to see the large percentage of these scooter kids not wearing protective gears while riding the scooters. To add to the chaos the kids drive at very high speed probably due to overwhelming excitement about their new found skill.

Scooter riding is just one scenario reflecting ignorance about importance of protective gears, but even when you go to skate parks, you will find a large number of kids not wearing elbow and knee pads. Skating is more dangerous as compared to scooter ride as kids here are trying to master several kinds of stunts and tricks. Since most of the kids I see here are very young and just at the beginner level of skating, there are high risks of their falling and hurting themselves. A fall on head can cause serious injuries and a crash without elbow pads can hurt like hell.I think probably the kids feel it is un-cool to wear elbow and knee pads, but hey, even the expert professionals wear elbow pads and knee pads while performing stunts. With the popularity of skiing, BMX, and scooter riding at an all time high among kids, it is important that parents start educating their kids about the significance of the protective gear. They should learn to put their safety first and stunts second.

One of the most important items in protective gears for scooters is the helmet. It protects your head from any possible injuries due to falls. The best thing is that nowadays helmets are available in so many different colors and designs that kids won’t mind wearing one. Make sure that the helmet is a snug fit to kid’s head and the strap is tightened properly. The kids’ helmets should be periodically replaced to ensure right fit as their head grows.

Elbow and knee pads are also very important part of the overall safety of kids. It may seem to be somewhat uncomfortable in the beginning, but kids will get used to them. Moreover the elbow pads and knee pads manufactured by leading protection brands are designed keeping both safety and comfort in mind. Elbow and knee pads are extremely helpful for kids and help them protect against broken knees and elbows when they fall while performing stunts.
